Mother Dao, the Turtlelike
Archival film fans! Don’t miss this rare opportunity to watch Vincent Monnikendam’s Mother Dao, The Turtlelike on Sunday, 09.01.2011, 15:00, at FSK Kino, Segitzdamm 2. More than 260.000 meters of 35mm documentary nitrate film footage from the Dutch film archives shot between 1912 and 1933 served as the source material for this film. In a span of ninety minutes the film aims to show how the Netherlands administered Indonesia as a colonial enterprise. According to the inhabitants of Nias, an island to the west of Sumatra, Mother Dao, the Turtlelike is the creator of the Earth. Her two children were the first humans to live in this fertile world, and it was the wealth of this earth that attracted the Europeans in their colonial endeavors. Programmed by Philip Widman as part of the exhibition ID-Contemporary Indonesian Art.
