LaborBerlin is happy to bring S.P.A.C.E. EXPANDED to Koncertkirken in Copenhagen—a performance program featuring works developed through the S.P.A.C.E. residency (Nov. 2022 – Oct. 2024), initiated by LaborBerlin, an artist-run analog film lab, as part of the SPECTRAL project. This unique European collaboration between six artist-run film labs supports analog projection as an artistic practice, offering resident artist’s studio space, equipment, and access to LaborBerlin’s film lab.

At Koncertkirken, we present expanded cinema performances that emerged from this intensive, hands-on environment. These works rethink the relationship between image and sound, transforming projection into a shared, immersive experience—underscoring the living vitality of analog film and its ongoing artistic potential.

Phenomena I-II – Carolina Romillo Marin (2x 16mm) with live sound by Sacharias (guitar) and Ronnie Hofmann (drums)

Phenomena I–II presents the first two films of an ongoing series exploring the four elements of nature: Air and Fire. The project seeks to reveal the character and essence of each element, reflecting on the fundamental principles of nature and humanity. It explores the cycles of phenomena, showing how destruction gives way to creation. Each element is personified through movement, cinematic techniques, hand-painted film, color, and sound, creating a layered, sensorial experience. Shot on black-and-white 16mm, each film is accompanied by live sound, immersing the viewer in the transformative forces of nature.

Postupak – Katrin Eissing (2x 16mm)

Questioning the concept of “social energy” —as intended by Hartmut Rosa—, Eissing is using interpersonal dialog as an artistic practice and conceptual starting point.

“I am using light as both a metaphor and a model for my expanded cinema work. Here films and lights are projected onto large flying objects in an open, democratic space. The themes of light and warmth emerge in their state of action, i.e. in motion. We create spaces where ideas and language become tangible via the physical manifestation of the work of art. The title for this process is “Postupak”, a term used by Michail Baktin, which is non-translatable (indeed, that is its value). I do use it herein as a description of this practice, or “Hand-lung” (in German): Art in social space. The event consists of joint improvisations with other artists and guests.”

F(r)ictions VIII – Laurence Favre (2x 16mm, video) with Olivier Richards (guitar)

F(r)ictions is an improvised dialogue between sound and music, between analog and digital instruments. An electric guitar, a 16mm projector and their fellows invite us for a journey into the forest, an encounter with atemporal creatures.

Carolina Romillo Marín is a Cuban-Spanish artist raised in Barcelona, where she studied Film and TV at Universitat Ramon Llull. She started her career as a producer and director of documentaries and fiction, later developing photography and videography while embracing analog formats and experimentation. Now based in Berlin, her work explores movement and the materiality of film through hand-painted celluloid, animation, and performance. Interweaving disciplines, she investigates intersections between nature and mysticism, the cosmic and the inner world, engaging analog processes as alchemical spaces where image and matter converge. Her films and installations have been shown internationally, receiving awards such as Best Foreign New Director (Winchester FF, 2018) and Best Dance Film (MITS Barcelona, 2020).

She is an OpenDialogue practitioner. Her films and works have been shown at German-language and international film festivals.

Laurence Favre research based work takes the shape of experimental films, installations and film performances, creating poetic sound-and-image-driven spaces where temporalities are blurred, and conceptual binary opposition such as presence/absence, visibility/invisibility, memory/oblivion, still/moving, real/fictional are diverted.

Olivier Richard is a Geneva based classical guitarist. Alongside his activity dedicated to the historical and contemporary classical repertoire, he has for several years been developing the practice of free improvisation, whether as part of his teaching or his creative research.
