Crater-Lab – Screening & Performance

On Wednesday July 31st 2024, to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Crater-Lab Barcelona will present a programme of experimental films that show the variety of techniques, processes, explorations and experiments possible in the context of an artisanal film laboratory, all produced around the Barcelona based lab. Luis Macias, co-founder and active member will present the programme, including a film performance from his series Your Eyes Are Spectral Machines.

Luis Macias (1976, Barcelona, Spain) is an artist, filmmaker and image composer. His pieces deal with the formal and spectral properties of the moving image, through the exploration of the cinematographic device itself and the photochemical nature of the medium.

The Kiss

Based on the film The Kiss (T. Edison 1896) in its original 35mm format, this video-film project is based on a structural re-shooting and re-recording of the original film in all the existing formats: analog, electronic and digital, in an evolutive form. The film is a reiteration of the act of kissing. The emphasis on the kiss, repeated and multiplied, while deteriorated in it’s own progress. The history of the evolution of formats through a kiss. An intimate and aesthetic relationship between media and audiovisual formats.

Cabanyal

José Añó Marí’s testimony about his experience in the bombings of Cabanyal during the Spanish Civil War faces the inevitable. The extinction of memory and the brutality of the past side by side trying to reveal the sensation of oblivion. In Cabanyal, sequences of intervened 16mm and artisanal cyanotype emulsion go hand in hand. In the interval between these two processes, the fragility of memory fluctuates.

First piece of the short film series for the Sixth Sun project. Inspired by the pre-hispanic myth of the Sixth Sun. This chapter is inspired by the René Daumal book “Mount Analogue”

Spectral Landscape

This performance is part of the series Your Eyes Are Spectral Machines in which Luis Macias investigates the concept of what he calls spectral cinema. The properties of the image and its forms and the modification/alteration of the mechanical structure of the projector are combined in new proposals for the exercise of a human eye that explores the images of nature and/or how it is revealed to us.
