Out of Focus LaborBerlin:
LaborBerlin lebt durch das gemeinsame Interesse, einen kollektiven Raum um die Arbeit mit Zelluloidfilm herum zu bauen. Dieser Raum entsteht permanent aufs Neue, durch die Menschen, die durch ihn hindurch gehen, ihre diversen Perspektiven und Herkünfte. Out of Focus LaborBerlin ist eine Filmreihe, die sich dem Labor als transitorischen Ort nähert. An fünf Abenden werden die Grenzen des Sichtbaren dieser kollektiven Struktur erkundet: Gespräche mit und Arbeiten von aktuellen und ehemaligen Mitgliedern, die den Blick öffnen auf Motive und Themen, die über das analoge Filmschaffen hinausgehen.
Zentrum des Universums:
Erst Mauerstadt, dann Technostadt, dann Partystadt – und heute ist Berlin das Traum-Ziel weltweiter künstlerischer Migration. Als von Filmemacher*innen und Künstler*innen selbstverwaltetes Filmlabor ist LaborBerlin Teil dieses Phänomens. Aber sind es nur die ökonomischen und logistischen Rahmenbedingungen und das liberale Klima in der Stadt, die die Kreativen aus aller Welt dazu bewegen, hierher zu kommen? Ist Berlin nur die Basis oder gar das Sprungbrett für eine Karriere andernorts? Das Berliner City Marketing hat ganz klar die Kreativstadt, die niedrigen Mieten und die Dynamik der Stadt im Fokus. Aber was sagen Künstler*innen und Filmemacher*innen dazu? Bietet Berlin überhaupt genügend Themen, Inspiration und Ideen, um hier als Künstler*in arbeiten zu können? Oder schweift der Blick sowieso lieber über den Berliner Tellerrand hinaus? Und wie ist die Position von LaborBerlin in diesem Szenario? Bernd Lützeler lädt Kolleginnen und Kollegen von LaborBerlin ins Zentrum des Universums ein, um ihre Filme zu zeigen und über ihr Verhältnis zu dieser Stadt zu diskutieren.

LaborBerlin’s vitality comes from the shared interest in sustaining a collective space built around practices involving photo-chemical film. This space is constantly in flux thanks to the people who pass through it, their various perspectives, and origins. Out of Focus LaborBerlin is a film series that approaches the laboratory as a transitory place. On five evenings, the limits of the collective’s visible structure will be explored. Join us for conversations with and works by current and former members exploring themes and perspectives beyond actual analogue film-making itself.
Zentrum des Universums:
First famous for its Wall, then for Techno, then for its club scene – Berlin has become the dream destination for global artistic migration. As a film lab run by filmmakers and artists, LaborBerlin itself is part of this phenomenon. Are economic and logistic conditions or the liberal climate in the city what encourages creative minds from all over the world to come here? Does Berlin merely serve as a foundation and basis, or even as a stepping stone for a career elsewhere? Berlin’s city marketing pitches the city as the place for creative people to flock to thanks to relatively low rents and dynamic energy. But what do artists and filmmakers have to say about this? Does Berlin work for them as a source of inspiration, ideas or stories for their creative work? Or have they shifted their focus beyond the borders of the city anyway? What role does LaborBerlin play in this? Bernd Lützeler invites colleagues from LaborBerlin to the Center of the Universe to show their films and discuss their relationship with the city.
